Field Prep Guide

To properly prepare a field for play, you will need:

From the field "lock box" located outside the playing field near the back stop:

  1. Base plugs
  2. Hose
  3. Bases
  4. String

From the left hand 40' container located back by the hitting cages, you will need:

  1. One of the two ATVs
  2. Chalking box
  3. Batters box template

Procedures

  1. If the bases and or base plates (squares with rubber nubs on them) are in, please remove them and place in plugs.
  2. WATER THE INFIELD BEFORE YOU DRAG! - Hook hose up to faucet located under the pitching mounds, Please take note of the exact location of the mounds so they can be replaced in exactly the same spot. Spray and water the red clay infield well. A good soak is optimal. Then remove the hose and replace the mound. NOTE: If the fields are moist or we are suffering from lack of water in the community, do not feel obligated to water the infield.
  3. Lift the drag crate matt off the back of the ATV and slowly (walking speed) drag the infield. Do this in a random fashion and do not go in a continuous one way direction. Also, do not drag the matt over the base plates.
  4. Lay the batter box template over the plate one way and drop the rectangle bars to one side. You can gently walk on the rectangle bars to imprint the outline in the clay. Lift and rotate the rectangle to the other side and repeat. Now you can "chalk" those two rectangles.
  5. Get another person and pull the string out to form a straight line from the right side of the HOME plate, across the outside of the first base "Base Plate" (square with the raised nubs on it) and extend it to the grass out field. Once it is pulled straight, lay it down. Now chalk over it. NOTE: The big timber nails on the end of the string reel can hold the string in place behind home plate if you are solo.
  6. While holding the string near HOME plate, have your partner pick the string up and walk it over to the third base foul line and repeat the procedure holding the string to the left side of home plate.
  7. If you like, you can "chalk" an "On Deck Batters Circle" for each dug out. Simply, midway from the fence out to the foul line, just beyond the dug out entrance away from home plate. So, closer to either first base or third base.
  8. PINTO SPECIFIC:
    • Pitcher Circle: The pitcher’s rubber will be 33 feet from home plate (roughly 11 paces). Chalk a 10 foot diameter circle centered on the pitcher’s rubber.
    • Home Run Line:  Place cones 150 feet (roughly 50 paces) from home plate. They should extend from the left field foul line to the right field foul line.
    • Basepath Halfway Line:  Please chalk a roughly 3-4 foot line perpendicular to the basepath midway between all bases except home plate and first base.  (This is a visual aid for our umpires to allow the baserunners to either advance forward or return to the previous base)
    • On Deck Circles:  For safety reasons, the on deck hitter should be protected by each fence.  Time permitting, third base on deck circle should be chalked behind the end of the fence.  First base on deck circle should be chalked in between the end of the dugout and the bleachers behind the fence line.

Team designated as "HOME" is responsible for taking down the fence each week night or last game on Sunday nights. Pull the fence from the ground sockets and until the entire fence is laying flat. Then roll from either end until it meets in the middle. It can be lifted onto the back of an ATV and moved to the green container. There, be lofted off and stood upright inside towards the back of the container.

NOTE: Please return ATVs and chalkers back inside the container when done. They do not like to be outside in any sort of moisture.
